The Hopeful City is BuildaBridge’s signature annual gala event held during National Homeless Youth Awareness Month. Artwork created by the region’s political, religious, social service, education, corporate, cultural and sports leaders, will galvanize a collective vision for a more hopeful city environment where children can grow and develop. The Hopeful City will highlight the important role of creativity and art-making in healing children and families experiencing trauma.
November 8, 2014, 7pm – 10p.m.
Held in conjunction with National Homeless Youth Awareness month
WHYY –Philadelphia, Independence Mall West, 150 N. Sixth Street Philadelphia, PA 19106
Over 300 guests are planned to be in attendance at the event to bid on the art work of the city’s public, corporate & cultural leaders in support of BuildaBridge’s mission. BuildaBridge is a Philadelphia-based arts education and intervention nonprofit organization that engages creative people and the transformative power of art-making to bring hope and healing to children and families living in contexts of crisis and poverty.
The Hopeful City fulfills a significant part of BuildaBridge’s mission–to bring hope—to children and in a city where homelessness remains a significant problem, where children are consistent victims of violence, where underfunding erodes education & quality of life, and where “safety net” and hopeful experiences remain elusive for many children. The event will help raise awareness of the important role the arts play in human health & development. Art-making engages young people in a process that builds resilience, helps youth communicate thoughts and ideas in new ways, form a vision for their future, and develop creative problem-solving, leadership & academic skills. A hopeful city must include a prominent and permanent place for arts involvement for all its children. To raise much needed resources to continue the work of BuildaBridge, and to increase BuildaBridge’s visibility as a significant contributor to the life of the city of Philadelphia and its child citizens.
